Limited pilot with select schools and learning communities

Soil & Compost Systems

Build and manage compost systems to break down organic matter and support plant growth

Program Overview

Students observe and track how soil is formed and sustained by actively building and managing compost systems.

Through hands-on experimentation and monitoring, students will track decomposing materials and their impact on plant growth to develop a deeper understanding of sustainable growing practices and the role that soil health plays in supporting life.

What Students Do

👷 Build, monitor, and maintain a small-scale compost system

📈 Add and track organic materials over time

📝 Observe and document decomposition stages

🪴 Analyze how compost supports plant growth

Key Skills & Concepts Covered

🔎 Observable patterns in material change over time

🌎 Environmental factors affecting breakdown and soil health

Designed for Real-World Application

The systems that actually support plant life and growth, such as soil health and decomposition, are rarely visible to students.

This program was designed to make those systems visible by making the process of organic matter breaking down, forming soil, and supporting plant life a hands-on experiment where students are in direct control. This makes tangible and observable to students how natural systems function and sustain life.

Standards-Aligned Learning

This program is designed to support alignment with NGSS standards related to plant growth, environmental factors, and patterns in living systems.

Join our pilot program

We’re partnering with a small number of schools and learning communities to pilot new programs. Pilot partners get early access, help shape the program experience, and receive priority support and pricing.
